چکیده

The Athiorhodaceae are photosynthetic bacteria which grow anaerobically on media containing any one of a number of organic compounds, plus carbon dioxide and a source of growth factors, provided that the-cultures are illuminated. In contrast to the green plants, no oxygen is produced during photosynthesis. A number of strains will grow in the dark provided that oxygen is present. Themost generally accepted concept ofthe photometabolism of these organisms is that developed by

Highly purified membranes (chromatophores)...

The Photoassimilation of Succinate to Hexose by Rhodospirillum Rubrum.

1. A pathway for the synthesis of hexose from succinate by Rhodospirillum rubrum is proposed. 2. With 2,3-(14)C(2)-labelled succinate and fumarate as substrates in experiments with chromatophores and a soluble enzyme fraction of R. rubrum it was found that the products of succinate metabolism by the extracts were the same as in whole cells. It was also found that the light-dependent oxidation o...

Photosynthesis in Rhodospirillum rubrum. II. Photoheterotrophic carbon dioxide fixation.

The contribution of the reductive pentose phosphate cycle to the photometabolism of carbon dioxide and to carbon metabolism in Rhodospirillum rubrum grown photoheterotrophically with l-malate as the carbon source is nil, unlike autotrophically grown R. rubrum. Glycolic acid appears to be the first stable product of CO(2) fixation in R. rubrum cultured photoheterotrophically on l-malate. The res...

Dinitrogenase reductase-activating glycohydrolase can be released from chromatophores of Rhodospirillum rubrum by treatment with MgGDP.

Dinitrogenase reductase-activating glycohydrolase (DRAG), involved in the regulation of nitrogenase activity in Rhodospirillum rubrum, is associated with chromatophore membranes in cell extracts. We show that DRAG can be specifically released by treatment with MgGDP; other nucleotides studied had no effect. The DRAG activity released corresponds to the release of DRAG protein.

Effects of 4-[beta-(diethylamino)-ethoxy]-benzophenone upon carotenogenesis in Rhodospirillum rubrum.

Carotenoid production was determined in illuminated anaerobically maintained cultures of Rhodospirillum rubrum in media with and without 4-[beta-(diethylamino)-ethoxy]-benzophenone. In treated cultures, lycopene--which normally is not produced by R. rubrum--accumulated as the predominant pigment, and total carotenoids increased five- to sixfold.
